How to Analyze a Hockey Game as a Complete Matchup
The starting goaltender is important, but learning how to analyze a hockey game requires looking well beyond the crease.
A goaltender operates inside a team structure. The skaters in front of him influence shot volume, shot location, rebound opportunities, screens, rush chances and penalty exposure. A complete hockey analysis studies the relationship between the goalie and that environment.
My process begins at five-on-five, moves through special teams and goaltending, and then accounts for pace, fatigue, injuries and coaching decisions.
Start with Five-on-Five Play
Most of a hockey game is played at even strength, making five-on-five performance the foundation of the matchup.
I want to know which team is more likely to control play, enter the offensive zone with possession and create chances from dangerous areas. Shot totals help, but they do not describe every shot equally. A harmless attempt from the perimeter is not the same as a rebound chance near the crease.
The NHL’s official statistics glossary provides definitions for traditional and advanced measures, while NHL EDGE adds puck- and player-tracking information that can deepen the evaluation of speed, shot location and team performance.
Useful five-on-five questions include:
- Which team controls the middle of the ice?
- Who creates more high-danger opportunities?
- Can either forecheck force repeated defensive-zone turnovers?
- Which team exits its zone cleanly?
- Are shot advantages supported by quality, or only by volume?
Study How the Styles Collide
Team quality matters, but style determines how that quality is expressed in a particular game.
An aggressive forechecking team may overwhelm a defense that struggles under pressure. That same forecheck can become vulnerable if the opponent moves the puck quickly and attacks through open ice. A team that prefers controlled possession may be frustrated by a disciplined neutral-zone structure.
I look for the tactical pressure point:
- Forecheck versus breakout
- Rush offense versus transition defense
- Net-front presence versus defensive-box strength
- Puck possession versus counterattack speed
- Physical pressure versus puck-moving composure
The goal is to understand where one team’s preferred style directly attacks another team’s weakness.
Evaluate the Goaltender in Context
Save percentage and goals-against average are useful, but they do not fully explain goaltending performance.
I consider recent workload, rebound control, lateral movement, performance against high-danger chances and the defensive environment in front of the goalie. I also distinguish confirmed starters from expected starters because a change in net can materially alter the matchup.
The official NHL goalie statistics provide the baseline. The next step is asking what kind of workload created those results.
A goalie facing frequent screens, backdoor passes and rebound chances has a different assignment from one seeing mostly clear perimeter shots. Context helps explain both strong and weak numbers.
Special Teams Can Reshape the Game
Power-play and penalty-kill percentages should not be evaluated in isolation.
I study how the units create or prevent chances. A power play may rely on cross-seam passing, point shots with traffic, a strong net-front presence or a primary shooting threat from one side. The opposing penalty kill may pressure aggressively, protect the middle or concede certain low-danger looks.
The questions are specific:
- Can the penalty kill take away the power play’s best entry?
- Does the power play have multiple scoring options?
- Is the penalty kill vulnerable to movement below the goal line?
- Are key special-teams players available and rested?
- Do either team’s style and discipline create an elevated penalty risk?
Special teams may occupy a smaller portion of the game, but they can decide it quickly.
Account for Schedule and Fatigue
Hockey’s speed makes fatigue especially important.
Back-to-back games, travel, overtime and heavy goaltender workloads can affect pace, defensive recovery and late-game execution. Fatigue does not automatically mean a team will perform poorly. Some teams manage compact schedules better because of depth, structure or efficient travel.
I look at the specific effect:
- Is the starting goalie playing on consecutive nights?
- Did the team use key defensemen heavily in the previous game?
- Was travel involved?
- Did the prior game require overtime or an extended comeback attempt?
- Does the opponent play a style that magnifies tired legs?
Schedule analysis becomes useful when it is connected to the demands of the matchup.
Injuries Change Roles, Not Just Lineups
An absent player creates a chain reaction.
Losing a top defenseman may affect zone exits, penalty killing and the minutes assigned to every remaining pair. Losing a center can weaken faceoffs, defensive coverage and a power-play unit. A missing winger may force line combinations that have little experience together.
I evaluate the replacement and the role redistribution rather than treating every absence equally.
Coaching and Line Matching Matter
Home ice gives the home coach the final change after stoppages, creating opportunities to pursue favorable matchups.
That advantage matters most when a team has a clear shutdown line, an exploitable defensive pairing or a scoring unit that can be protected from a difficult opponent. Coaches also influence goalie usage, defensive-pair rotations, forechecking pressure and when to shorten the bench.

Build a Hockey Game Script
After evaluating the parts, I build the likely flow of the game.
Will one team establish offensive-zone pressure? Can the opponent create dangerous rushes if that pressure breaks down? Which team is more likely to draw penalties? Does either goalie face a shot-quality profile that targets a weakness? Who owns the depth advantage if the game remains tied late?
Then I identify the loss scripts—the most realistic ways the analysis can fail. Hockey contains natural variance, including deflections, unusual rebounds and short special-teams sequences. A responsible analysis respects that uncertainty.

Before reaching a conclusion, I review:
- Five-on-five possession and chance quality
- Forecheck, breakout and transition matchup
- Confirmed goaltenders and recent workload
- Power-play and penalty-kill structure
- Injuries and role changes
- Rest, travel and schedule demands
- Home-ice line-matching opportunities
- Likely pace and game script
- The clearest ways the analysis could fail
Final Thought
Goaltending can decide a hockey game, but it does not exist separately from the matchup.
The strongest analysis explains what kind of chances each team is likely to create, what kind of workload each goalie is likely to face and which tactical choices could change the flow. That combination of data and context is central to my sports-analysis process.
