How to Analyze an MLB Matchup Without Relying on One Statistic

Learning how to analyze an MLB matchup begins with one important idea: a baseball game is not simply one starting pitcher against another.

The starters matter, but so do the lineups they face, the pitches they throw, the relievers available behind them, the defense, the ballpark and the weather. A complete MLB analysis studies how those factors connect.

My approach is to build the matchup in layers. Each layer must either strengthen the central argument, weaken it or reveal an uncertainty that requires more research.

Step 1: Evaluate the Starting Pitchers Properly

Traditional statistics provide a useful starting point, but they are not the finish line.

I review a pitcher’s innings, strikeout rate, walk rate, home-run exposure and recent workload. I then compare those results with the quality of contact he has allowed. MLB’s official expected ERA definition explains how xERA uses contact quality—including exit velocity and launch angle—along with walks, strikeouts and hit batters to estimate performance on the ERA scale.

The purpose is not to declare that ERA is useless or that xERA is perfect. It is to understand whether the pitcher’s results and underlying performance tell a similar story.

I also ask:

  • Has velocity changed?
  • Is the pitcher’s command stable?
  • Has his pitch usage shifted?
  • Is he generating swings and misses with his best offering?
  • Has his workload increased sharply?
  • Is there a meaningful home-and-road or handedness split?

A strong analysis explains why a pitcher is succeeding or struggling.

Step 2: Study Pitch Mix Against the Opposing Lineup

Season-long offensive rankings can hide the most important part of a matchup.

A lineup may perform well overall but struggle against high-velocity fastballs, breaking pitches away from its power side or a particular arm angle. A pitcher’s full-season numbers may look ordinary while his primary weapons align extremely well with an opponent’s weaknesses.

I break the matchup down by pitch type, location, handedness and expected lineup composition. The question is not just whether the lineup can hit. It is whether the hitters expected to start are equipped to handle what this pitcher does best.

This is where confirmed lineups matter. One or two absences can change the handedness balance, on-base ability and depth of an offense.

Step 3: Separate Contact Quality from Recent Results

Baseball results can be noisy over short stretches. A hard line drive can become an out. A poorly struck ball can find open grass.

Metrics such as expected batting average and expected weighted on-base average help evaluate the quality of a hitter’s contact. MLB explains that xwOBA uses exit velocity, launch angle and, on certain balls in play, sprint speed while also incorporating actual walks and strikeouts.

I use expected statistics as evidence, not prophecy. They help answer whether a hot or cold stretch is supported by the way the ball is being struck.

Useful contact indicators include:

  • Hard-hit rate
  • Barrel rate
  • Exit velocity
  • Launch-angle profile
  • Chase and whiff tendencies
  • Expected batting and slugging results

No single metric should control the conclusion. Agreement across several measures is more meaningful.

Step 4: Treat the Bullpen as Part of the Starting-Pitcher Analysis

Many MLB breakdowns discuss the starters in detail and treat the bullpen as an afterthought. That leaves a major part of the game unexplained.

I review which relievers pitched during the previous two or three days, how many pitches they threw and whether the manager’s preferred high-leverage arms are realistically available. MLB defines Leverage Index as a measure of how much a situation can change win probability. That concept is useful because not all relief innings carry the same importance.

A bullpen’s season ERA may look strong even when its best late-inning options are unavailable. Conversely, an average bullpen may be in a good position when its top relievers are rested and the starter is capable of working deep into the game.

The analysis should include likely bullpen paths, not just bullpen rankings.

Step 5: Analyze the Lineup That Will Actually Play

Team-level offensive statistics are only useful if they resemble the lineup on the field that day.

I check projected and confirmed batting orders, recent injuries, platoon possibilities and bench depth. I then evaluate how the lineup’s on-base ability, power, strikeout profile and handedness fit the opposing starter.

The bottom third of the order matters. A lineup with six dangerous hitters and three easy outs creates a different run environment from a lineup that can extend innings from top to bottom.

Step 6: Account for Defense, Catching and Baserunning

Pitching outcomes are affected by the players converting balls in play into outs.

Defense can be especially important when a pitcher relies on contact rather than strikeouts. Catcher framing, blocking and control of the running game can also influence the matchup. On offense, baserunning can turn singles into scoring opportunities or erase them with poor decisions.

These factors rarely receive the attention given to home runs and strikeouts, but close games are often decided at the margins.

Step 7: Check the Ballpark and Weather

The same batted ball can produce a different result in a different environment.

Temperature, wind direction, humidity, roof status and park dimensions can influence scoring expectations. Weather should not be used as a vague reason to expect offense or pitching dominance. The effect must be connected to the teams’ contact profiles and the shape of the ballpark.

A strong wind blowing out is more meaningful when both lineups elevate the ball with power. It may matter less when the offenses produce mostly ground balls.

Step 8: Consider the Umpire Carefully

The home-plate umpire can influence the strike zone, but this factor should be used with restraint.

Small samples and changing performance make it dangerous to label an umpire permanently as favorable to pitchers or hitters. I treat umpire information as a supporting factor after the core matchup is established, not as the foundation of the analysis.

Step 9: Build the Most Likely Game Script

After evaluating the components, I connect them into a game script.

Can both starters work deep? Which lineup is more likely to force a high pitch count? Who owns the late-inning advantage? Is one offense dependent on home runs while the opposing pitcher limits quality airborne contact? Does a tired bullpen create a clear vulnerability after the starter exits?

The game script should explain how the expected advantage could develop inning by inning.

It should also identify the clearest failure points. If the analysis depends on five uncertain events occurring in sequence, the conclusion is not strong enough.

Before completing an MLB game analysis, I review:

  1. Starting-pitcher form and underlying metrics
  2. Velocity, command and pitch-mix changes
  3. Pitch-type matchup against the expected lineup
  4. Lineup availability and handedness
  5. Contact quality and plate-discipline trends
  6. Bullpen workload and high-leverage availability
  7. Defense, catching and baserunning
  8. Ballpark, weather and roof conditions
  9. Umpire information
  10. The most likely game script and its failure points

That checklist creates structure, but it does not replace judgment. The analyst still has to decide which factors are most important in that specific matchup.

Final Thought

The best MLB analysis does not search for a statistic that confirms an early opinion. It starts with an open question and lets the evidence build the conclusion.
